Security in Cyberspace

Győr Office | Foreign and Security Policy

Organized by the Győr Office of the Antall József Knowledge Center and taking place on the 28th of April, the discussion entitled Security in cyberspace sought to assess some current security issues in the virtual space and concentrated particularly on the various effects of the pandemic on this specific environment. The invited expert of the discussion was Dr. Csaba Krasznay, Director of the Cybersecurity Research Institute at National University of Public Service, while the event was moderated by Bence Kocsev, Head of the Győr Office of the Antall József Knowledge Center.

Cyberspace is one of the most defining environments of contemporary social and economic processes, in which not only the daily interactions take place, but also the functioning of critical sectors and infrastructures, as well as the operation of business processes are increasingly linked to it. Apparently, this also means that any security problem that may arise in the cyberspace could easily lead to significant social and economic shocks. Raising awareness to this, the introductory exposé started with an overview, in which the transformations and major challenges of the recent period (including the developments of the information security, and the new trends in cybercrime) were examined. After the presentation, some further general topics (cyber security awareness of the Hungarian society, the looming challenges of the coming decades, the relationship between artificial intelligence and cyberspace) were touched upon and a special attention was given to the pandemic-related concerns. In this latter context, the Director of the Cybersecurity Research Institute addressed the changing patterns of cybercrime and shed some light on how developments in cyberspace, and fake news in particular, could influence society’s attitudes towards pandemics. In answering the audience’s questions, the invited expert furthermore provided some practical advices how to increase our personal information security.

The event was realised with the support of the Prime Minister’s Office of Hungary and the Bethlen Gábor Foundation.
